Soft Homemade Dinner Rolls Recipe

If there’s one thing every table needs, it’s a batch of soft, buttery dinner rolls. Made with a brioche-style dough, these rolls bake up perfectly fluffy every time with a slight hint of sweetness. They’re soft, rich, and the perfect addition to your dinner table—especially for soaking up all the good stuff.

How to Make these Homemade Dinner Rolls?

  • Mix warm milk, melted butter, and sugar. If using instant yeast, you can skip the proofing step and mix it right in. If using active dry yeast, you’ll need to dissolve it first before adding it to the dough.
  • Combine with flour and salt. Using a dough hook or a wooden spoon, mix until the dough comes together. If using a stand mixer, allow the dough to knead for about 10 minutes and the dough no longer sticks to the sides of the bowl.
  • Place in a oiled bowl and let it rise until doubles in size.
  • Once it doubles in size, punch down the dough and cut in half then even size sections
  • Roll into dough balls, then allow it to rise for another 45 minutes.
  • Bake on 375 for 25 minutes or until golden and brown.

What you’ll need:

Here’s what you’ll need to make these soft and butter dinner rolls:

  • All purpose flour: you can also use bread flour. This will yield a more chewier texture
  • Milk: warm
  • Butter: unsalted and melted
  • Yeast: I like using instant dry yeast. Here’s my favorite.
  • Sugar: this helps sweeten the rolls. You can also use honey.
  • Salt: helps balance the rolls
  • Egg: room temperature.
Nothing beats homemade dinner rolls fresh from the oven. They’re soft, buttery, and the kind of bread everyone reaches for first. Simple to make and perfect for holidays, weeknight dinners, or anytime you want fresh bread on the table.

Why you’ll love these Dinner Rolls?

  • Soft and fluffy with a perfectly tender crumb
  • Buttery and flavorful without being heavy
  • Perfect for holidays or any family dinner
  • Great for make-ahead and reheating
  • Crowd-pleasing they disappear fast

Active Dry Yeast vs. Instant Yeast

  • Active Dry Yeast: Needs to be dissolved in warm water before use, has larger granules, and rises more slowly. Best for long fermentation.
  • Instant Yeast: Can be mixed directly into dry ingredients, dissolves faster, and rises quicker. Ideal for same-day baking.

💡 Swap Tip: If using instant yeast instead of active, reduce the amount by about 25%.

Tips for making the best Dinner Rolls

  • The milk temperature should be about 110degrees F. Warm to touch but not hot. If you think it’s too hot allow the milk to cool
  • Rising time will vary depending on how cold your home is. I like to place mine in the oven with the light on.
